Quilt Piecing 101



Quilt Piecing 101 is a Beginner Class Series aimed to equip you with fundamental skills needed to piece a quilt top. Our class covers essential topics such as fabric selection, thread, accurate cutting, piecing, assembling blocks, adding borders, and pressing techniques for optimal results. 

The class will span over three weekday evenings, from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Please note that there will be some sewing homework between classes. 

Supply list. Please bring the following supplies with you to the first class.   Most supplies are available at The Fabric Chic.  
                 

  • Quilt Piecing 101 fabric kit and book are required and are available at The Fabric Chic.  The kits are usually available the week before the class. 

  • A sewing machine in good working order - don't forget your cord & foot pedal.  You must know how to use your sewing machine.  Please bring your sewing machine manual if you have it. 

  • A quarter inch foot for your sewing machine  

  • Quilting or universal sewing machine needles - size 80/12  

  • Quilting rulers for cutting fabric and measuring blocks. Suggested ruler sizes are: 

  • 3 ½ X 6 ½ for trimming blocks, 

  • At least 6 inches wide by at least 12 inches long (maybe wider and/or longer) for cutting fabric 

  • Pins, Scissors and Snips, Rotary cutter - we recommend a 45mm size 

  • Seam Ripper  

  • High quality thread – we recommend Aurifil 50 weight, long staple cotton thread in a neutral color. We recommend a light gray or ecru color.   
     

Basic sewing knowledge is a prerequisite for this class, and you must know how to operate your sewing machine. If you are new to sewing, we recommend attending the "Meet Your Machine" class, also available on our calendar.  
 
Quilting and binding your project will be taught in separate classes.
 
 

*Minimum age requirement for this class is 16 years
**Minimum class size is four students

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Basic Sewing knowledge is required and familiarity with your sewing machine is strongly encouraged. You must know how to use your sewing machine.
Requirements: Purchase of class instruction book and fabric kit.
Instructor: Julia Westbrook
Instructor Bio: Julia learned to sew as a youngster, making doll clothes by hand. She was introduced to quilting in 2010, and is an enthusiastic quilter. She enjoys sewing in many forms, making quilts, wall hangings, table runners, bag making, and garments. She is looking forward to sharing her years of experience with you.
