Sew Together Bag

The handy Sew Together Bag holds all of your sewing notions, embroidery supplies, or other hobby supplies!  Or, use it for your manicure tools and supplies, or any other situation that needs a clever organizing bag!

We have offered this class many times and most participants finish the project in class, unless they choose to hand finish the binding.

The Fabric Chic has a variety of "Ready to Sew" kits to make this bag. The kits have all materials needed for the bag and the fabric pieces are cut and attached to interfacings.  You can purchase a kit or make your own fabric and zipper selections. The pattern is available separately in the store, as well.  You must have a pattern to participate in class.  No photo copies allowed and no sharing of pattern allowed.

Supplies:

Sew Together Bag pattern

Fabric:

One fat quarter for the outer shell or a pieced fabric at least 13.5” x 9.75” (see note below regarding options for the outer shell)

One-yard total for the inside of the bag and bindings.

For the inside of the bag, you can choose to use one or more coordinating fabrics.

I like to make a scrappy look by using a different fabric for each compartment, for the linings of the zippered pockets and a different one for the bindings.

For a scrappy look, you can use nine or ten 10” squares (half yard total) for the pockets and pocket lining. In addition, you will need a half yard, or two fat quarters, for binding and the side panels.

The outer shell can be quilted with batting. I like to double up my batting if the batting is thin or use fusible fleece; you can use the fusible fleece without quilting. Foam interfacing, such as Soft and Stable makes a nice structure for the bag.  I do not recommend the fusible foam.  If you decide to quilt it, you will need to cut it larger and trim to size after quilting.

If you want a quilted outer shell, you should plan to have that step done before the class.

For the inside zipper tabs, you can use scraps of fabric. You need 6 pieces about 1.5” x 5”.

Please cut your fabric before the class, it will give you more time for putting the bag together. If you don’t have time, you can cut your fabric during the class time, but you may not finish the bag completely.

Zippers - The pattern requirements suggest three 9” zippers.  I prefer to use  longer ones (12" - 14") that can be shortened for the inner compartments and one 18” zipper or longer for the outside closure.

Fusible Interfacing - 1 yard of lightweight fusible interfacing (I like SF101)

General Sewing Supplies - You need to bring your sewing machine with a zipper foot and walking foot, if you have one. General sewing supplies such as a thread to coordinate (there is top stitching), snips, rotary cutter, scissors, pins, seam ripper etc. You need a marking pen that shows up on your fabric (a dark pen for light fabric and vice versa, so you may need both) A glue stick for glue basting zippers is highly recommended! For finishing the binding by hand, you will need a hand sewing needle and a thimble.

A ruler that is at least 3.5“ wide is handy.
