Basic Binding

Come learn the basics of bindings, facings, flanges and other edge finishes for quilts. Students will learn several different techniques from connecting binding strips, putting in an accent piece, making a flange, constructing a two-pieced binding, attaching prairie points and facing a quilt. After learning these techniques, the design choices are endless! Each student will make samples of each technique to take home for reference.
Basic Binding Class-Supply List
You will learn several different techniques in this class. The fabric requirements for each technique is listed below.
- Basics of connecting; hand stitch finishing; machine finishing
- Scrap binding pieces - whatever binding scraps you have leftover. 2 1/2" or 2 1/4" by at least 8"
- Accent pieces-attached
- 1 strip 14” by 1 ½”
- Scrap binding pieces at least 18”
- Accent pieces- floating (flange)
- 1 strip 14" by 1 1/2"
- Scrap binding pieces at least 18"
- Two pieced binding to make flange
- 1 strip 1 7/8" by 14"
- 1 contrasting strip 1 1/4" by 14"
- Traditional Facing
- 2 strips 14" by 3"
- Prairie points- turned back and traditional facing
- Six - 3 1/2" squares
- 2 strips 14" by 3"
Bonus-time permitting- Faux binding. 2 strips - 4” by 7”
Each student needs two 14" by 14" quilt sandwiches.
Additional Supplies
- Sewing machine in good working condition with a new needle installed. Don't forget the power cord and cable.
- Basic sewing supplies - thread, scissors, binding clips, etc.
