Tree Hugger Pillow

Join Jan in making the Tree Hugger Pillow by Swirly Girls.  This design is a fast, fun, easy Holiday project!  Learn some quick tips to make covered cording (piping ) using basting tape to hold everything in place.  You can use fusible fleece for an easy quick sew, or use batting and quilt your pillow front.   The finished  pillow is 28” x 14” - perfect for an entryway bench or sofa accent.

Supplies required: 

  • Pattern - Tree Hugger Pillow by Swirly Girls Design for Cut Loose Press
  • Ruler - Creative Grids 30 degree ruler #CGRSG1
  • 1 yard Heat and Bond Feather Lite Fusible
  • 14.5”  x 28.5” Fusible Fleece (you may substitute batting, if you plan to quilt your pillow)
  • 14” x 28” Pillow Form
  • 2.5 yards Polyester Cable Cord 9/32 

Fabric Requirements:

  • (5) print fabrics for trees - 6.5” x 10.5” (10” squares will also work) 
  • (1) 2” x 6”  dark solid or print fabric for tree trunks 
  • 1/2 yard background fabric (fabric behind trees) 
  • 1/2 yard backing fabric (to make the back of the pillow) 
  • (1) fat quarter accent for cording cover (piping fabric)
  • Wash-a-way Wonder Tape or other 1/4” basting tape
  • Thread that matches or coordinates with the tree fabrics
  • Thread for (optional) quilting the background

Other supplies and notions: 

Sewing machine in good working order, all purpose foot for zigzag or blanket stitch attaching the trees, zipper foot for making the covered cording (and walking foot if you plan on quilting the pillow top)

Sewing pins or clips

Rotary Cutter

A long acrylic ruler - 6” x 24” 

Any other notions that you like to have handy while sewing

The Sewing Lounge has four large ironing stations and cutting stations, but you may bring a personal cutting mat and/or pressing mat and iron. 

By registering for a class, you acknowledge and agree to these policies.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Students should be familiar with their sewing machine and have fundamental sewing skills, including cutting with a rotary cutter.
Requirements: Students should have prior sewing experience and understand the operation of their sewing machine - changing feet, stitch selection , threading etc.
